Insurance for rental car

May 19th, 2009 cloud Comments

You often need a car on rent when you are out of your town. Make sue you know about all the clause and conditions before signing a contract for a rental car. You should know the prices charged on you if anything happens to the car you have rented. What if you meet with an accident? What if the car gets scratched? Before signing an agreement of the rental car you should take all these points into consideration.

The first thing asked to you by the rental car agency when you go to check out the counter to pick up your rental car keys is whether you have purchased the rental agency’s insurance policy. It is not at all necessary to purchase the rental car insurance from the rental car agency. You may have car insurance for your own car. Your car insurance provider may provide some coverage on the rental cars.

Find out how much your car insurance company provides you coverage on the rental cars. Your company may provide you full coverage for the rental cars. If you pay the rent for the rental car via credit card, the credit card company may automatically put rental car insurance on the rented car. If you do not possess rental car insurance through any of these sources, you need to buy one for yourself.

Rental car insurance not only provides coverage for the damages incurred in an accident but also for the lost time on that car. If the car is scratched, you could be charged. Be sure to check the car carefully before driving it off. If you find any damages then get it mentioned in your contract.

Hidden Fees and Charges

You may think that you know how much the rental car will cost when all is said and done, but you likely will be surprised when you get your final bill due to additional fees and charges. Of course, you will have to pay taxes on your rental car. Be sure you plan for this when budgeting for a rental car.

You may also be charged for gas. Some rental car companies charge a flat fee for gas and instruct their renters to return the car close to empty. Others will not charge the gas fee if the car is returned full. If you can fill the car up yourself, do so, because the rate the rental car company is going to charge for gas will be more than the gas station down the street.

If a driver on the contract is under 25 years old, expect to pay an additional fee, if the rental car company will even allow this driver to drive the car. Also, it will cost extra amount of money for adding additional drivers to the agreement. Finally, be sure to inquire about late fees, and turn the car in on time unless you absolutely cannot do so.

Renting a car seems like it should be an easy task, but there are many considerations that you need to make before signing the contract. Make sure that you know exactly what you are agreeing to do, and follow through with your end of the contract. This will defend you from surprising and expensive fees when you return the car.
